AS9100 to IA9100 Transition: What Manufacturers Should Do Now

For aerospace manufacturers, the AS9100 to IA9100 transition should begin with a practical question: can your quality management system consistently support the work you sell, produce, inspect, and deliver?

What is IA9100?

IA9100 is the planned designation associated with the next revision of the aerospace quality management standard widely known in the Americas as AS9100. NASA’s development update explains the move toward a shared IA designation and the relationship between the aerospace revision and ISO 9001. Its April 2024 article reported Q4 2026 as a publication estimate. Treat that as a historical planning estimate. Read NASA’s development update.

Is IA9100 already the certification requirement?

The public IAQG Standards Register reviewed for this article, revised May 2026, lists AS9100 Rev D as the current issued Americas version. Its public 9100 resource page continues to provide 9100:2016 guidance. We did not verify a final IA9100 certification transition deadline in these official sources. Check the IAQG Standards Register.

ISO currently announces September 16, 2026 for ISO 9001:2026. That announcement does not establish an IA9100 publication date or determine when an aerospace certificate must transition. Check ISO’s current revision information.

Continue meeting the requirements applicable to your certificate and customer contracts. Coordinate any change in audit basis with your certification body.

What changes should manufacturers watch?

NASA identified revision discussion topics including product safety, supplier controls, information security, ethics, counterfeit prevention, transfer of work, and Advanced Product Quality Planning. These were development topics, not a final list of new requirements.

Use them to guide a readiness conversation. Review the published standard and applicable certification instructions before changing your compliance obligations or committing to a transition deadline.

Six actions to complete now

1. Confirm your certification and customer commitments

Record your certificate scope, expiration date, next audit, and significant customer requirements. Identify who will monitor IAQG updates and communicate with the certification body. Put transition planning on the management review agenda so leadership owns the resources and decisions.

Success means one accountable person can explain what applies today and how future changes will be evaluated.

2. Follow a real order through the QMS

Choose a recent job and trace it from quotation through shipment. Check contract review, drawing revisions, purchasing requirements, material records, production instructions, inspection results, and release authorization.

For a machine shop, this could mean confirming that the revision quoted matches the drawing used at the machine and the inspection record retained for shipment. Record the gaps, assign owners, and verify corrections on another job.

3. Strengthen supplier and product controls

Review how the shop approves suppliers, communicates requirements, checks received material, and handles supplier changes. Confirm that personnel know how to escalate questionable certificates, missing traceability, and product safety concerns.

Prioritize the failures that could cause an escape, disrupt delivery, or affect customer acceptance. The objective is consistent evidence that purchasing and production controls work together.

4. Review access to technical information

Identify where drawings, inspection programs, customer specifications, and quality records are stored. Check who can change them, how revisions are approved, and whether backups can be recovered.

Treat this as a practical operational review. Evaluate any additional information security obligations against the actual customer contract and applicable requirements rather than assuming that a future aerospace revision makes every advertised cybersecurity framework mandatory.

5. Make training specific to each role

Operators, buyers, programmers, inspectors, and managers need different instructions. Define what each role checks, what records it creates, and when it stops work or escalates a concern.

Verify understanding through actual work. Attendance alone does not show that someone can select the correct drawing revision, identify missing material certification, or document an inspection result correctly.

6. Build the transition plan around evidence

Once the applicable revision and transition instructions are available, compare them with the existing QMS. For each gap, record the affected process, required change, owner, completion date, and evidence needed.

Then implement the changes, train affected personnel, audit their effectiveness, and review readiness with management. Should a small manufacturer wait to start AS9100?

If customers require certification now, build a practical system against the applicable certification basis and plan for controlled updates. Delaying needed improvements can leave the same documentation, traceability, and supplier problems unresolved.
